Orchid of the Week: Bllra. Big Shot Hilo Sparkle

The orchid of the week goes to the orchid that got me hooked – The Beallara Big Shot ‘Hilo Sparkle’

It has nice big flowers, the blooms last for a long time, and they have a fragrance. 

It likes bright indirect light.

It seems to like moist, but not soggy media.  I also have some success in water culture.

I’ve only gotten it to bloom once a year, around the end of Fall.

Like most orchids, they like air movement.

I have dry winters, and it doesn’t seem to get too affected with humidity in the 30’s.  but they do a lot better with much higher humidity.

Like most of my orchids, I fertilize weakly weekly.

She’s in full bloom and smelling great. The lite spicy scent fills the room! This is the orchid that got me addicted. I’m sure you can see why. Hope to grow this to a huge specimen. Bllr’s dont seem to need much light. I learned the hard when when I thought it was an oncidium and put it in stronger light. It was fine in the winter, but when summer hit, I had some burn spots on the leaves. So I put in bright shade. The foliage is nice enough to put in a pot and have around the house. It’s currently in a semi-hydro setup. I converted most of my oncidium type orchids to spaghnum or semi water culture. But this one doesn’t seem to mind semihydro. It’s only sending out one new pbulb of new growth so far after spike. And I’m only getting one spike at a time. But hoping the new seaweed extract I added to the fertilizer mix will change that for the next blooms and growth. I’ll also start using a blooming fertilizer sooner to hopefully get 2 spikes per pbulb. The purple in the middle of the flower starts to blend in together as the flower starts to wilt.
